Around this time last year, I was interviewed for "The Green Cleaning Magazine".  Here is the link to the questions and comments.  Oh, why am I bringing up something from a year ago...because it is still true!

Central Methodist University Staff Takes Step to Certification

This month, 20 staff members at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri went through the GCI Tech class on their way to earning Silver EHS status for CMU.

Derry Wiswall, Director of Plant Operations, was on hand for the 8 hour educational session.  "The educational experience that Davids' course provided to our custodians gave them a completely new look at the world of environmental health professionals", says Derry. He continues, " The course is an exciting new approach to healther, higher education green cleaning standards."

Are You Educating or Training?

In the cleaning industry staff members continually hear about the next ‘Training’ session and immediately turn off.  So what is the difference between the two and how do you get staff members to stop and listen?  Educate them!

It should also be noted that not every person will retain everything placed in the instruction, so this is why there has to be continual education sessions provided prior to the ‘trainings’.

CORRUPT USAGE OF CERTIFICATIONS

Fake Green CertificationNo matter how hard you try to make sure you are following the best and most honorable practices, it seems there are always individuals who believe they can step to the side and do whatever they want.

New Year, Deep Clean, Fresh Start!

It is that time of year when we spend more time indoors. This can lead to more clutter, which can provide a perfect winter home for pests. Signs of infestation include droppings, holes chewed in pest-edible materials, and paper stashes in corners or behind and under appliance and fixtures. Here are some great tips for custodians and teachers to keep pest presence to a minimum:

EcoLables, the EPA and You

What are EcoLabels and can you have a say in how they read?  With literally thousands of products labeled 'Eco', it is now a constant challenge to weed through the bogus labeling and find appropriate products.

While GCI has our own criteria and grading system which follows our education, you may find this program from the EPA useful.

EPA and DfE Continue DIsinfectant Pilot Program

All disinfectants are intentionally toxic to microorganisms and currently, none can be accurately qualified as 'Green' by any major third party certification programs.  Too date, any such claims by the disinfectant manufacturer are inappropriate and may even violate EPA and FTC regulations.
